RESUME
Cet article analyse le déroulement des enquêtes diocésaines dans les causes de béatification et de canonisation, conformément à l’Instruction Sanctorum Mater (2007). Après avoir clarifié les notions de béatification et de canonisation, l’auteur expose les fondements historiques du culte des saints et l’évolution de la compétence ecclésiale en la matière. L’étude décrit ensuite les différents officiers impliqués dans l’enquête — l’Évêque diocésain, le Délégué épiscopal, le Promoteur de justice, le Notaire, ainsi que les experts médicaux ou techniques — en précisant leurs qualifications, leurs rôles et leurs obligations, notamment le serment de secret. L’article souligne l’importance d’une instruction rigoureuse garantissant l’intégrité des preuves. Enfin, il examine les exigences relatives au lieu des sessions, qui doivent se dérouler dans un espace approprié et neutre. L’ensemble met en lumière la portée juridique et ecclésiale d’une enquête diocésaine conduite selon les normes actuelles.

ABSTRACT
This article examines the conduct of diocesan inquiries in causes of beatification and canonization, following the norms of the 2007 Instruction Sanctorum Mater. After defining beatification and canonization, the author outlines the historical development of the veneration of saints and the gradual concentration of procedural authority in the Holy See. The study details the roles of the principal officers involved in the inquiry — the diocesan Bishop, the Episcopal Delegate, the Promoter of Justice, the Notary, and medical or technical experts. Their qualifications, responsibilities, and obligations, including the oath of secrecy, are carefully presented. Emphasis is placed on the necessity of a thorough and methodical gathering of evidence to ensure the credibility of the process. The article also discusses the requirements regarding the location of sessions, which must take place in an appropriate and neutral setting. Overall, the study highlights the juridical and ecclesial significance of a properly conducted diocesan inquiry.
